Government Fraud
Government fraud comes in many different "packages". Here, we look at some of the ways that government fraud continues to be committed.
Medicare/Medicaid Fraud
Every working tax payer puts aside a certain amount of dollars in each paycheck that goes toward his or her Medicare security should he or she need it. However, some persons are under the impression that Medicare is an entitlement. Thus, they commit government fraud by pretending to have fewer assets than they really do so they can obtain Medicare coverage and not have to pay for medical expenses out-of-pocket.
False Statements
Government fraud is also committed when persons who are subpoenaed lie under oath to the government. This kind of false statement can land an individual in prison. Similarly, signing one's name to incorrect information is also a form of false statement government fraud; thus, it's critical to read everything before putting one's signature to it.
False Claims
Making false claims to a government agency is also a form of government fraud. Some people or businesses do this around April 15 (a.k.a., tax day), believing that they'll never be caught. However, if and when they are (through an audit or investigation), the penalties can be severe. Similarly, claiming that someone has done something against you when you know that it isn't true can be a form of government fraud if it involves a federal agency or employee.
Social Security Fraud
Some criminals have been known to steal or even purchase social security numbers from others. (This has been happening recently with illegal immigrants purchasing the social security numbers of dead persons; the result is a huge mess that will no doubt result in plenty of federal prison terms.) When they use these illegitimately-obtained social security numbers, they are committing government fraud. They are also committing identity theft, a form of fraud which has gotten plenty of negative media in recent years.
Government fraud comes with a high penalty if one is found guilty. Thus, if you or someone you care about has been charged with the crime of government fraud, it's essential for you to immediately hire an experienced and aggressive attorney to represent you.
