Insurance Fraud Crime: Facts on Insurance Fraud lawyers
The crime of insurance fraud occurs when someone tries to defraud an insurance carrier for his or her own personal (or business) gain.
A good example is an insured person who, sometimes with a physician's assistance, forges documents alleging that he or she received medical help which never occurred. The insurer, believing the false claim, reimburses the person or the physician; whoever receives the money then gives the other a "cut".
Another example of insurance fraud occurs when a physician falsifies the reasons that an insured patient "needs" a certain surgery. For instance, a patient might want a certain procedure, such as eye laser surgery; however, his or her insurer will not agree to cover it. Thus, the doctor agrees to file a false claim stating that the eye surgery is necessary (rather than elective). In this case, the insurance company may indeed pay for all or most of the surgery. In this case, the physician gets paid and the patient gets his or her unnecessary procedure for free (or almost for free.)
A final example of insurance fraud is that which includes Medicare. Sometimes, persons who are not eligible for Medicare coverage falsify documents so they don't have to pay out-of-pocket expenses for their medical needs such as doctor's visits or prescriptions.
These kinds of insurance fraud happen with alarming regularity and cost insurance carriers billions ($80 billion is estimated in the U.S. alone) each year. Insurance fraud costs the insurance companies so much that they must transfer those losses to their covered persons; thus, premiums begin to rise in direct proportion to the increase in insurance fraud incidents. Those who are found guilty of insurance fraud are usually labeled as "con artists" and their friends and family are stigmatized by proxy.
