National Statistics on Crime

Violent crime increased 2.5 percent in the U.S. between 2004 and 2005 according to a FBI report, most was around the midwest states.

TOTAL NUMBERS:

  • Violent Crimes: +2.5 percent
  • Murder: +4.8 percent
  • Forcible Rape: -1.9 percent
  • Robbery: +4.5
  • Aggravated Assault: +1.9

People often say that crime is on the rise, and when you consider the national statistics on crime, you can't help but agree that they might be on to something. Look at some of the national statistics on crime compiled for the year 2002 as examples:

23,035,000 - The reported number of victimizations that occurred. This includes all types of crimes, from robberies and simple assaults to motor vehicle theft and rape.

17,539,000 - The number of property crimes (household burglaries, motor vehicle thefts, and other theft of personal or business property) committed.

990,000 - The number of aggravated assaults that occurred during the aforementioned period of time.

90,000 - The number of rapes that were reported (up 6,000 from the previous year). As a caveat, many more rapes are assumed to have taken place but were unreported due to embarrassment, fear, or other reasons.

5,341,000 - The approximate number of violent crimes that were reported, including robbery with injury, sexual assault, and attempted rape.

From these national statistics on crime, we can see that there is, indeed, an issue of violence in our society. Though we cannot stop crime, it's apparent that we need to punish the violators and protect the innocent.

Truly, what these national statistics on crime do not reveal are the many people whose lives were adversely affected when a friend or loved one suffered victimization of some sort. Certainly, crimes of all types make an impression upon all persons with whom the victim came in contact, including companions, employers, and coworkers.
