Can I protest a speeding ticket?
Yes you can, however, you may find it difficult. Many police officers will not even pull you over unless you are going about 10 miles over the limit. Many of them also use radar which can be used in court. If this is your case then you may be better off being extremely nice to the police officer and paying the fine. If you want to protest, you certainly have the right. The police officer is obliged to put his or her badge number on the ticket so they will have to explain themselves in court. However, again, you may get further by being polite to the officer. They may let you off with a warning or write the ticket for less than you actually committed.
Are there different types of speeding tickets?
Yes, if you're driving over the speed limit, but not horribly then you'll most likely get a standard speeding ticket. If you're on a mission to break the sound barrier in you car then you could get a ticket for speeding and reckless driving. This carries a much heavier fine and could even result in your car being impounded or bring a jail term. The police do not look kindly on reckless driving because you are endangering, you life, the lives of other drivers as well as the life of the officer who is pulling you over.

As stated before, you can protest and have your day in court if you think you're being treated unfairly.
