Telemarketing Fraud

In the past few decades, telemarketing fraud has been on the rise. As one might expect, telemarketing fraud is used to describe any fraudulent activity that occurs via telephone communications. Some of the most common types of telemarketing frauds are noted below:

Charity Scams
In these telemarketing fraud schemes, a telemarketer contacts a person claiming to be from a charity. The charity named may be altogether illegitimate, or the name of a legitimate charity might be given. Regardless, the person agrees to give the charity a certain amount of money which is then pocketed by the telemarketer.

Prize Schemes
These types of telemarketing frauds occur when someone contacts a victim and tells him or her that he or she has won a "valuable" prize. The person need only give the telemarketer the cost of shipping and handling or a similarly "small" sounding amount to cover taxes or other bogus charges. Of course, the "prize" (if it ever arrives at all) is typically worthless; thus, the victim is "out" the cash and the telemarketer loses nothing in the process.

Credit Card Scams
These telemarketing frauds happen when a person pretending to be with a bank or a credit card company calls a victim asking for his or her password, social security number, or credit card number as "verification". Sometimes, the telemarketing fraud individual will sound frantic, ostensibly to increase the odds that his or her prey will come forth with information. Believe it or not, these types of telemarketing frauds are highly successful, especially among elderly persons.

"Great" Business Investment Schemes
This type of telemarketing fraud preys on individuals desires to "get rich quick." A person contacts a victim via the telephone giving him or her the "inside scoop" on an amazing investment opportunity. Once the victim agrees to "invest", his or her credit card number is given or a check is sent, and the con artist walks away with cash. (Lottery scams are a kind of telemarketing fraud that is similar to the business investment scheme.)
